When does a consumer unit need to be replaced?
When there are too few circuits, missing residual-current protection, outdated components, or an addition such as a charge point, battery or induction hob.
You wouldn't replace a consumer unit without good reason. But there are clear signs that it should be assessed.
- There is no, or insufficient, residual-current protection in place
- The unit is full and no further circuit can be added
- You want to add a charge point, home battery or induction hob
- There are regular faults or visible overheating
- The installation is being extended or the home is being renovated
Extending or replacing
Sometimes an additional sub-panel is enough. We assess the existing installation first and only then advise. Replacement is never a goal in itself.
