What is the difference between kW and kWh?
kW is power, kWh is energy. The difference determines what a charge point or home battery can do at any given moment, and for how long.
kW (kilowatt) is power: how much electrical power is being delivered or drawn right now. kWh (kilowatt-hour) is energy: power multiplied by time.
A charge point that charges at 11 kW for one hour delivers 11 kWh to the car. A 10 kWh home battery with a 5 kW inverter can therefore release that energy over roughly two hours.
Why this matters when you get a quote
For a home battery, capacity (kWh) determines how much you can store, while power (kW) determines how fast you can charge or discharge. A large battery with limited power cannot always cover your peak demand.
For a charge point and the consumer unit, it's the other way round: the available power of your grid connection determines what you can use at the same time.
